Highlands is under a flash flood watch until 8:00PM followed by high winds gusting to 40 mph. Tomorrow morning, temperatures are supposed to be in the teens. Last weeks weather (specifically Thursday's 6.25" of rain) set us back a few days and it looks like today will do the same. If we get the several inches of rain that is expected, we will more than likely have to replace sod that's be installed recently that isn't rooted. Also, the high winds will bring down limbs and debris, requiring us to clean up the golf course for a 3rd time this spring. Please keep all this in mind and have realistic expectations if you plan to return to the Club in early April. We only mowed greens for the 1st time yesterday, after a period of 4 months of dormancy. On top of that, we are also healing from aerification. I'm happy with where we are and I expect to be ahead of schedule in terms of the greens. By the first week of May, weather permitting, we should be close to our summer height of cut in the 0.115" range. Until then, we are mowing the greens slightly higher in the 0.140" range to get faster aerification healing and also to promote root growth. It is critically important to establish good roots this time of year because once we get going, it's mostly down hill below ground level. The combination of low mowing, other man induced stresses, shade and obscene amounts of rainfall, all result in compromised roots.
