Above: Gary is doing a great job verticutting and we have half of #14, #15 and part of #17 remianing which will be knocked out tomorrow. Then it's time for some sand!
Above: This is a never before see portion of the stream below #12 tee boxes. This stream has been consumed in Rhododendron for the last 20 plus years.
Two Oak trees were removed on #9 that were struck by lightning last summer. I counted rings and determined the trees were approximately 140 years old. The tree started as a sapling circa 1880 and by 1928, it was a 6" caliper tree. By WWII, the tree was a 9" in diameter. It's interesting to me to look at trees in this light.
Aggresive pruning on the right side of the stream on #11 really brings the water into sight. Our continued work on our water features will be very evident this coming season.
Our croquet lawn expansion begins tomorrow, when out contractor will be on site. Our first line of business is removing the rock from the walls. Our hope is to reuse as much rocak as possible on the new walls.
Finally, the image above was sent to me by one of the climbers working with our arborist. He was 50 feet off the ground, in the tree (not on HCC campus), and was looking down the inside of the trunk! The center of the tree is rotten, of course, and those cone structures are the branches on the inside of the tree! This is a facsinating picture, in my opinion.
I have begun to use this disclaimer because it is not uncommon to see members walking the golf course on nice afternoons. It's also not uncommon to see members pull out their telephones and immediately start photographing the work that is being accomplished. If you have a question regarding any of the work that is being done, please don't hesitate to call myself (828) 787-2778 or Green Committee Chairman, Chris Hohlstein. We'd be more than happy to explain what we are working towards accomplishing on your golf course.
