20 years ago, all of our irrigation satellite boxes on the golf course were outfitted with surge protection and data line protectors. This surge protector was blown to smithereens after lightning struck the 2 trees to the right of #9 cart path. I've never seen a device blown apart like this; even the cover was melted! It blew the cover, that was held on with screws, off the unit. Had this part not been installed, this likely would have been a $5,000 loss. Never underestimate the value of good surge protection, especially in our area with a lot of underground rock and frequent electric storms.
