Interesting Golfdom cover from 1931 breaking down labor dollars spent per surface in terms of golf course maintenance. The 17th hole at Seminole is pictured on the cover. This magazine is still around today however, it's now geared toward the turf industry.
According to this, in 1931, for every dollar spent on the golf course:
- 6 cents went to Roughs
- Bunkers: 8 cents
- New construction: 7 cents
- Greens: 37 cents
- Fairways 12 cents
- Tees 6 cents
- Misc Work:24 cents
I'm not sure exactly how this helps, but I doubt it's actually changed too much. Putting greens will always consume the most resources followed by Fairways, simply due to the total acreage. Tees seem a little low and approaches are something that's not mentioned.
