Annual Bluegrass Weevil (ABW)

In the last 5-6 years, the population of Annual Bluegrass Weevil (ABW) has dramatically increased.  This can be a pretty severe problem on fairways and tees.  The insect feeds on Poa annua, and is able to thin the turf quickly.  Fortunately, we have seen some minor damage on a small number of fairways but have been able to treat with success.  Other courses are seeing insecticide resistant ABW, which can create a tough situation.  The first generation adults emerge from overwintering sites in April and immediately begin feeding on turf.  The second generation, where we experienced some minor issues, occurs during the beginning of July.  Our main defense of this insect is scouting for adults to see where the population stands.  This involves soap flushes of the soil and turf in areas on fairways.  On the 1st hole at HCC, we installed an ABW trap to catch adults emerging in the spring.  This pitfall trap collects adults to where they can't escape.  Checking the trap today, we found only one, which obviously wouldn't be a concern as of now.  We will monitor the population leading up to mid July, 1-2x a week.
