This is the eerie sight around Highlands with multiple forest fires. The smell of smoke is at times unbearable and the air is always hazy. There continues to be no rain in sight. These are unpresidented times and kind of scary. Fortunately, no homes are in danger as of yet. Off in the distance, you can hear US Forest Service helicopters coming and going- taking huge "buckets" of water dipped out of Lake Sequoyah to fight the fire near Cliffside Lake, where over 100 acres of forest is burning. Talking to the Highlands Fire Chief today, he said those buckets carry 1,600 gallons of water!
