Croquet Update and Future

If you recently came to Highlands, you might think there is a lot of work left on this project.
The truth is, it's about complete. Here at some facts:

1. Green Tee Golf, the contractor who built the courts are finished on Friday. That's right, the entire area will be sodded by this friday afternoon and all equipment will be hauled away. The landscape is being installed by HCC staff.

2. Greg and I are working with Mary Palmer Dargan, our Club's landscape architect to make the area blend with our beautiful campus.  Her vision is incredible. 80% of the base plants are installed and the rest will be here this Friday and Monday.  By Tuesday, we will be mulching the beds.

3. The pavilion is complete with only mirrors in the restrooms yet to hang! Lupoli Construction will have the certificate of Occupancy by next Wednesday.

4. The turf on the lawns is starting to root nicely and we are mowing the courts for the first time on Wednesday.

5. The lawns will open for play on or around May 1st! Please keep in mind, the sod will take time to work down to height. We will also need to do a fair amount of verticutting to firm them up and get rid of the "thatch" layer that comes with sod. Sodding of greens is faster but certainly takes a lot more work to get the results that seed gives. When ever there is a choice, seed is the way to go.

Thank you for your patience with this project. From a staff perspective, it's been incredibly fun, educational and challenging.  Quite honestly, I am sad to see it end and hope for more projects like this in the future. It energized me like I haven't quite experienced before. I nearly shed a tear watching Sunrise Sanitation haul off the Porta-John.  It was a sign of closure on the project.
