When walking to class in San Diego, or anywhere for that matter, I always take notice of all things plants and couldn't help but see the tree roots out competing the turf in this area. I am trying to determine the species of tree with such a shallow root system. There are certain types of trees that do better in turf situations; this isn't one of those. When a tree is planted in grass, it's the first day of a slow death. Without decomposing leaves and mulch, the tree never receives nutrients. For the remainder of it's life, it competes for nutrients with the grass and both suffer.
