A Superintendent Support Group on Facebook...

On the social media site, Facebook, there is a group called, "Golf Course Maintenance."  It is a platform for superintendents and others in the industry to discuss golf course maintenance topics.  Before someone joins the group, one must "prove" your affiliation to the industry. There is a lot of intelligent and useful conversation that occurs but mostly I enjoy following it for the humor and hearing about unfortunate predicaments some find themselves in (due to poor equipment operators etc).  Many use it as an avenue to vent frustration and as I read it, it gives me the same feeling as I get spending an hour people watching at Wal-Mart. When I leave, I realize just how good I look and feel. In this case, I realize how great Highlands CC is, as is the job of serving as superintendent. There is no question this job requires a good amount of effective communication in a number of directions...to staff, to bosses, coworkers and to members. Some superintendents are in situations where they simply don't have the resources to meet the expectations of their members and can't or don't communicate the facts.  This question above appeared tonight.  Obviously the frustration is evident by sarcasm.  I got a chuckle out of this. I can only hope he learns to overcome gravity and speed those greens up!  Of course he is in a no win situation given the members want the greens to roll the same speed uphill as they do downhill.

The idea of a job being a constant uphill battle is so foreign to me.  The culture of mutual respect and the support from the membership that is evident in all departments at HCC is something my team doesn't take for granted.  Having been employed at 7 different golf facilities over the last 22 years, I realize HCC is a special minority.
