This morning we are spraying wetting agents on the golf course to help re-wet the soil. In a turfgrass environment, when soil becomes so dry, it actually becomes hydrophobic and repels water. At this point, the only thing that can be done is to apply surfactants and wetting agents that reduce water tension, allowing moisture to get back into the soil. Otherwise, with any irrigation or rain event, the water will simply run off. It is important to water these agents in really well so they don't burn the turf. Wetting agents are nothing more than a form of industrialized soap.
