Fine Fescue beds like this one on the 9th tee box, are popular on golf courses for a number of reasons. A combination of Chewings, Hard and Creeping Red Fescues, they are a throwback to historic Scottish golf courses where these grasses are indigenous. More importantly is the amount of labor that is saved. In the past, these banks were weedeated (it didn't look good either), which consumed a tremendous amount of labor that could have been devoted to something that impacted the actual playing surfaces of the game of golf. At HCC, I estimate we've converted nearly 2 acres of land to these native grasses that was once maintained.
