The Graden machine is out in full force this afternoon, starting on the practice green. Using 3mm blades, this machine removes organic matter up to 1 1/4" deep. Sand is deposited in the void left by the blades. This process alone can remove 12% organic matter in one direction. Although recovery can be slow from this, it is an integral part of our overall aerification plan.
Above, you can see the 3mm channels of sand left across the green.
Finally, above is a shovel full of Organic Matter. Organic matter is old decayed roots, grass, pollen etc that accumulates in the upper root zone. It holds excess water and can make greens 'spongy.' It is necessary to get the material out of the greens and replaced with new sand. This keeps the greens firm, dry and able to achieve faster green speeds. This is why we aerify.
