Talk about an ugly day...37*F and raining! We have no choice but to work in this weather because a truck load of sod was delivered today, unexpectedly. Next week, our plate is full finishing up the Graden process on greens. We have to work around sand deliveries since we only have one silo to store dry sand. Lining up tanker trucks to make these deliveries in the mountains is no easy task. Therefore, I have sand coming Tuesday which means I need to use 30 tons of sand on Monday in order for the silo to be empty to accept the next delivery.
14 pallets of bluegrass were delivered in addition to 4 pallets of Zoysia for those 3 shaded tees. You can see the bluegrass is certainly being grown in a warmer climate compared to Highlands! Of course, the Zoysia is dormant. Once the Zoysia is rooted, I will start aerifying and lowering the height of cut. In addition, I am going to introduce other grass species to help create a surface that can tolerate that much shade. Unfortunately, there is no shade tolerant turf. All grass needs sun and these tees prevent that from happening. As I said before, there is no magic formula for lack of sunlight. I once had a member tell me, "Superintendents remove trees because it makes their jobs easier." That quite possibly is the most ignorant agronomic statement ever made! Remember, plants (including grass) photosynthesize to make food. No Sun or limited sun = no photosynthesis. No photosynthesis = dead grass! There is no way around it.
In addition to that sodding, a crew of guys are working on raising the edges of the new asphalt on the driveway. Anytime new asphalt goes down, we need to add fill to the edges in addition to grassing.
