With a winter storm on the horizon, we are getting a few loose ends tied up on the golf course. Friday, I had two large white pines removed from behind the employee housing complex. Our focus is the entire property, not just the golf course. Safety plays the biggest role in prioritizing which trees to remove both on and off the golf course. As I mentioned before, many of these white pines are at the end of their life.
Today's snow storm is calling for 2-4" of snow with the possibility of a 1/4" of ice. Once again, www.highlandsweather.net is the most accurate weather info for our area.
We will spend a majority of our time today inside, making additional hazard stakes. I came up with this idea in 2004 and we've been making our own stakes this ever since. In fact, many other local clubs followed our lead. I get more comments from my fellow superintendents about our hazard stakes than anything else when they visit HCC. They are certainly unique and original to Highlands Country Club. Each year, I rotate in another 100 or so and remove any existing stakes that are beginning to rot. During the process of becoming GEO certified, our environmental consultant commented on how great of a sustainable practice this was!
