Although I am never really asked, the greens in November are never "fast" like the rest of the year. Why is that?
1. Our greens don't get near enough sun to be able to abuse them this time of year. In fact, greens like #2, 15 and 16 are thinning as I type. 1 hour of sun per day won't cut it!
2. Due to cooler temps, the turf isn't growing. Any damage done, won't heal.
3. The dynamics of staffing levels: I will lose nearly half of my staff on December 5th. That means we have little time to get the projects on the golf course complete that the membership demands. I can't afford to have the crew tied up (4 hrs/day) mowing and rolling greens this time of year. If we are going to complete our projects, the priorities must shift.
4. There simply isn't enough play to warrant the time required to get the course in tip top shape. While we have a few members play, there are also a fair amount of complementary play (ie golf pros, superintendents etc). Most of these folks are coming from local clubs that have already closed.
5. Historically, April and November have been looked at as months that will get some fair weather. If it is nice out, play is welcomed given the member/golfer are willing to tolerate playing with some projects taking place. However, progress has come first.
6. Finally, all height of cuts have been raised. This is a prime month to ensure healthy turf going into 2015. At this point in the year, the coming year is my priority.
