HCC Fairways

Each day as I walk the fairways I always admire how much less Poa annua is in our fairways compared to 10 years ago.  The reason?  We have been spraying a growth regulator combination of Primo and Cutless over the last 10 years.  Together, they shift the competitive advantage to the creeping bentgrass rather than the bunch type growth habit of Poa annua.  However, our 'clean up lap' (the outer edge of the fairway) has more Poa in it compared to the rest of the fairway.  I think there are 2 reasons for this.

1. Every time a fairway mower lifts the reels to turn around, Poa seed is dropped in these areas.

2.  Clean up laps tend to get more wear and tear resulting in thinner turf; a more ideal location for Poa annua germination.

There is no doubt the quality of these fairways improves every season.  A commitment to  topdressing, spraying, aerifying and verticutting along with mowing with high quality turf equipment that you provide us with, all add to improved fairways.
