Today we stripped the sod on a good bit of #16 collar. This is the most challenging green on the golf course to maintain due to lack of sun. Replacing the collar sod has become somewhat of an annual event. The shade issues get worse as trees get larger. Unfortunately, those trees that cause the problems aren't on club property so removal isn't am option.
I once had a golfer tell me that, "superintendents are notorious for cutting trees down just to make their jobs easier." This I s where science comes into play. This is the equivalent of your doctor telling you he wants you to be a marathon runner but here is the catch...everything you eat needs to be consumed between the hours of 3pm and 4pm. Sounds silly, doesn't it? Plants use sunlight to make food. High quality turf that will be abused by low mowing and rolling needs a minimum of 6 hours of sun/day. There is no magic concoction to spray on turf to replace it.
