There has been discussion recently about the quality of turf on the driving range tee over the past couple seasons. Our driving range tee is about .6 acres. The USGA has a recommendation size of 1 acre of turf per 10,000 rounds played. That means our tee should be 1.3 acres in size, ideally. That said, most ranges are built with the land available, not what is ideal. Our range tee also has a few drainage challenges. Last summer, in an effort to push more turf growth and fill divots, it made the decision to aerifying, seed and topdress mid season. Also keep in mind that cool season grass is much different that Bermudagrass which, heals much quicker. When cool season turf is seeded, it takes a full 3 months before that seed would be mature enough to be played on. Simply put, a divot taken in May, won't be able to be used until the following year. Our golf shop staff has done a wonderful job of educating members on divot patterns and range usage. I will be working with the green committee in the next few months to develop a plan to ensure we have better turf quality through the summer given the constraints we face.
