Following aerification, it is important to topdress the greens with sand so the holes get filled. One of the main advantages of being closed over the winter is being able to 'bury' the greens in sand. Not only does the sand fill the holes as rain and snow cause the sand to settle, but it also acts as an insulator, keeping the greens protected from the winter winds. I started this program in 2004 when I took over as Super and continued it with much success.
