Fairway Interseeding

Today we will begin the process of interseeding 125lbs of bentgrass seed into the fairways.  Our goal is to achieve a predominatly bentgrass stand of turf in the fairways.  HCC is 85 years old which means our fairways have a variety of turf in them including Bentgrass, Poa annua, Poa trivialis, Ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass.  It is interesting because when HCC was built in 1928, turf was never specified for the golf course.  What grew was tolerated and used.  Compare this to new golf course construction where specific varieties are seeded or sodded on each playing surface.  This is one of the challenges of maintaining an old course without doing an all out renovation.  We use PennTrio, developed at Penn State University, as our choice of fairway grass.
